Ridge and Rett kept conversation light when they regrouped, fearing that any discussion might be overheard. When they had traveled a distance from the manor and were on a deserted stretch of road, they tied up their horses and got out the provisions Henri had packed. That included not only a cold lunch but also a container of salt, which Henri told them afforded some protection against magic.

Ridge laid down a line of salt in a circle around where they stood. “Well?” he asked, taking a sausage egg from the basket along with a chunk of bread.

“The servants seemed to genuinely like Albrecht,” Rett reported. “They also seemed protective. No one would say more than that he enjoyed the garden and had good luck growing plants. They also made a point of saying that he grew flowers and herbs for the kitchen, nothing strange or unusual.”

Ridge nodded. “I think Albrecht had a touch of magic, and the people around him knew it. Did any of the retainers mention a traveling monk?”

Rett nodded. “Brother Felix? His name came up as the lead suspect for making Albrecht leave. No one thinks he left voluntarily.”

“What about Edvard? Did the family ghosts have anything to share?”

Rett lapsed into a faraway look for several minutes as Edvard passed along his information. “Healing magic runs in the family,” Rett confirmed. “The same ability helped with growing plants and making remedies. One of the ghosts from a few generations back seemed angry that her abilities would be against the law, when in her day people came from far away to seek her help.”

“Any insights into what happened to Albrecht?”

Rett listened to Edvard again, then nodded. “A ghost told Edvard that he saw Albrecht meet someone in the garden late at night, and that man ‘made him fall down’ and then put him in a carriage and took him away.”

“Sounds like Brother Felix either drugged him or used magic. I don’t think Albrecht would have left Bram without saying anything.”

“Agreed.”

Ridge ate, thinking through the next steps. “As much as I want to ride for the monastery and see if they’ve ever heard of Felix, I think we should check out Elinor’s family first. If there really is a common thread to the disappearances, we need all the information we can find.”

“When we’re back in the city, I’d like to learn more about Duke Cordon and Lord Fontaine,” Rett added. “It would be interesting to know where they’ve stood on the Witch Lord. If they think Makary is a danger, then Albrecht and Elinor might have been taken to pressure them into compliance. And if they’re supporters of the Witch Lord, they might have had a hand in the disappearances to use those talents for Makary’s benefit.”

Ridge hadn’t considered that possibility, and it made his stomach turn to think that a parent might betray their own child. But he knew that far worse had been done by those who sought power.

When they reached the Fontaine estate, Ridge, Rett, and Edvard divided the witnesses as they had done at the Cordon manor.
